Okay, so biting the bullet on my next couple of reviews because I m behind and don t want to get even further behind by being paralyzed about what to say.Bottom line about One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night super fun spoof of action films in book form Great characters even though they could have been flimsy Very funny Features dialogue written in the Scottish dialect, which I thought was really fun but then again, I never seem to have a problem interpreting accents in books or movies Never [...]

    2. Purple says:

Oh good lord this is good.Sometimes I want to write a book Then I read one of Christopher Brookmyre s and I just think No, leave it to him he knows exactly what he s doing and I don t There really isn t anything as enjoyable as reading one of his hostage books see also Be My Enemy You ll wonder how you got by without it before. No, I don t own a copy of this book I d be willing to sell swap It s mine, get your own.Seriously, go and get it Now.

    3. Karen says:

Gavin is a holiday tour operator turned big spending resort developer who was invisible at school Simone, his wife, has had enough of Gavin and his philandering and wants a divorce, although Gavin doesn t know that yet Catherine is the PR agent for the oil rig resort and for reasons that even she doesn t even seem to understand, Gavin s latest lover Matt is a successful stand up comedian turned wealthy but less successful celebrity due to his part in an American sitcom, and Davie is a violent nu [...]

    4. Margaret says:

This book is a hoot I listened to the unabridged recording read by Kenny Blyth 10 discs , which should add to the editions list for this title It s a fabulous performance, complete with truly authentic Scottish accents and no silly high pitching of the voice for the female characters, thank you very much , of a hillarious action adventure book set in Scotland The tone and unfolding convoluted, goofy plot that is well written was to me reminiscent of Westlake s The Hot Rock and books by Ross Thom [...]

    5. Wendle says:

One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night Action films Amateurs School reunion. This book is humour, plot, action, romance, gore and humour in a perfect little parcel. The references to action films throughout the book are the perfect accompaniment to the plot The book is realistic in its portrayal of ordinary people put in a Die Hard esque situation view spoiler Ally McQuade vomiting on a bad guy from the air ducts hide spoiler , while simultaneously being fantastical view spoiler Matt Black tak [...]

    6. Jamie Collins says:

This is a pretty average Christopher Brookmyre novel, but it s been awhile since I ve read one, so I enjoyed it than I expected to It has a great title, as usual.Brookmyre tends to be full of righteous anger at the state of the world, and he spends as much time ranting as he does storytelling, but he nevertheless usually manages to be clever and hilarious and exciting He produces characters to root for, and characters you love to hate, and the bad guys always get their comeuppance in the end.As [...]

    7. E.J. Lamprey says:

One of Christopher Brookmyre s most quoted reviews calls his style tartan noir and that sums it up neatly I started reading his books because I d moved to Scotland and half the time I didn t understand the language The first one was like having a bucket of blood thrown in my face I was gasping with shock, but laughing despite myself He s a very clever, very exhilarating writer and I recommend most of his stuff but this is still my favourite, just nudging Snowball From Hell from the top spot The [...]

    8. John R. says:

This was my first ever Christopher Brookmyre title and I loved it and still do I discovered it during a trip to Australia in 1999 and it troubles me to this day that he isn t popular than he is in the U.S He might not be for everybody s taste but I d put him on a par with Carl Hiassen and that s pretty heavyweight company as far as I m concerned.Of course, mystery crime with a strong comic element isn t always popular but Brookmyre s sensibility is dark and funny in such a winning combination t [...]

    9. Malky says:

Funny as fuck and contains the phrase exploding teuchtar.

    10. Casey says:

I ve not read anything by Christopher Brookmyre before, this was my introduction to his writing The synopsis sounded so interesting and a little different that I had to read it.To be honest, I found it quite slow at first A good half of the book is just introducing the characters which I found dragged a lot and I grew a little bored of it Writing an accent is always a dicey proposition, as is using very specific slang, personally, and sometimes it read so relentlessly Scottish, like the author w [...]

    11. Rachael Hewison says:

I m still continuing on my mission to read all of the Christopher Brookmyre books The last ones I read were the Angelique de Xavia series and because I loved those ones so much, it was hard to get into this one at first There were so many characters to come to grips with and I got particularly confused with the bad guys The setting on the oil rig also threw me out completely I struggled to understand the lay out of all the hotels and underground bits and found that I just had to ignore that and [...]

    12. William says:

I absolutely never read thrillers, and ended up with this one by accident because I was so impressed with the first book by Brookmyre that I read And the book has some startlingly vivid violence, something else I try to avoid in what I read. And, go figure, I enjoyed this book enormously The plot is meticulously crafted, and really hangs together well The characters are believable And best of all, portions are laugh out loud funny But Brookmyre also writes with style and intellect, and the reader [...]

    13. Pippa says:

If only there was another star to give this book I have just been introduced to Christopher Brookmyre and have been seriously impressed with his dark humour, fast pace and excellent story lines but One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night takes this to another level I cannot find fault with this book, except it ends.Being classed as crime has always out me off reading his novels but it just goes to show, you should never judge a book by it s genre Yes, this is a thriller of epic proportions schoo [...]

    14. Nathan says:

This was a wierd one which owes than a little nod to Grosse Point Blank and Die Hard In brief school reunion is attacked by mercenaries Wild lurches in tone between lad lit style romance and action movie hijinks Kinda understandable if you allow yourself to be dragged into the book s reality, but very silly otherwise Still, I d give another of his books a go 3.5 5

    15. Stephen Wallace says:

Obviously the person who has given the review below me for 1 star doesn t have a sense of humour OK so this may not be one of the litary greats but for fast paced action and thrills, with enough rib ticklers to have been laughing out loud in public places I would give this 4 5, but only as I find it difficult to give anything 5 stars.

    16. Edward Koo says:

This book offers a chuckle here and there, but the most interesting aspects is how the author explores what it means to embrace the past and who you are The buildup is great, but the ending was a bit anticlimactic Nevertheless, a solid 4 5 stars

    17. Helen says:

Even years later I can remember the funniest moment ever from any book I ve read When Ally is crawling through the ducting, with the baddies and hostages below him I was sat in the bath reading and had tears of laughter streaming down my face.

    18. Sandi says:

A hilarious page turner set during a class reunion that is taking place on an oil rig turned luxury resort off the coast of Scotland No one combines the totally absurd with graphic violence better than Brookmyre.

    19. Petra says:

A friend suggested this author, and I just love him First I read most of them through my library and now I have started to purchase the lot, and read them again in chronological order And I have to say, second time around it s even better

    20. Adam says:

Guy Ritchie just north of Hadrian s Wall It took me a while to figure out the Scottish accents, but once I did it was a lot of fun Action filled and funny.

    21. Sue says:

Another great read from Christopher Brookmyre.

    22. Denise Martin says:

One of the quickest books I ve read in a long time but that may have something to do with being 38 weeks pregnant and having neither the inclination nor ability to do much than read

    23. Mike Worth says:

I like Christopher Brookmyre s books easy to read and this was as good as all the others.

    24. Algernon says:

the Scottish version of Grosse Pointe Blank Highly entertaining mix of humor and action movie, set on an oil platform in the North Sea

    25. Fiona says:

This book is hilarious I found myself laughing on public transport it was so funny It s classic Brookmyre Ridiculous situations, great one liners and interesting characters.

    26. Maria Gabriella says:

Fabulous book Really, the dry humour is real here, and I was laughing on my own already after the first pages From there, it goes downhill very quickly, with gore and wit to leave you smirking or just laughing your head off.Best scene former PI McGregor hitchhiking with a severed arm It is just too funny. Now go on and read it, I won t tell you because I would otherwise spoil it.

    27. James says:

Not his best book in my opinion, the start was funny but seemed rather disjointed from the rest of the narrative as too many characters view points have to be introduced to the story line Still good fun and comes together quite well.

    28. Heulwen Sweet says:

Pithy humour Characters with depth and fkaw Glasgow What is not to like

    29. Karen says:

Something dumb and fun , my self prescription read, following Katie Ward induced torpor Well, noone, least of all me, would accuse Christopher Brookmyre of being dumb, but his brutal intelligence is purely at a textual level the wordplay, the plot, the jokes as opposed to some wanky meta bollocks Sorry, brain s auto censor function still temporarily disabled And, oh, what fun So much so that I totally overlooked my professional responsibility to myself major rule of medication administration be [...]

    30. Cadfan says:

This is a highly enjoyable emotional roller coaster I loved the combination of absurd humour, sharp unexpected thrills and touching, relatable character interactions The characters are likeable, easy to relate to and plausible indeed throughout the book you may actually find yourself truly caring for their well being in the various situations they get into However, this book is not purely a thriller the author also keeps us on our toes by using witty, engaging and intelligent language as well as [...]
